How does the Virtual Stair Climb work?

Pick a day between September 25th and October 1st to climb 75 floors or 1,664 steps (the equivalent of our traditional event location, the US Bank Tower in Downtown Los Angeles). There are many ways to complete your Virtual Stair Climb:

1) CLIMB OUTDOORS: Head to your local hiking trail, stairs, or bleachers! All you need is a smart device to track your 75 floors. We encourage you to time yourself and submit your results! Below are a few ways to track your climb. Feel free to use your own preferred app or device if it’s not on our list.

  • iPhone: In the “Health” app under the activity tab, you can see how many floors you climbed per day. Head to the “Summary” page and hit “Edit” to add Flights Climbed to your summary page.
  • Fitbit: Only the Fitbit Charge 3, Versa, and Ionic track floors climbed. Log in to your Fitbit account and under the activities tab you can see how many floors of stairs you climbed.
  • Apple watch: Open the Activity app on your Apple Watch and you can view how many floors climbed.

2) COUNT YOUR STEPS: Don't have the technology to track your climb? Count your own steps! Challenge yourself to reach 1,664 steps.

3) GET CREATIVE: Feel free to add your own creative spin. Don't want to go outdoors? You can do step ups in your own home! Whatever you choose to do, you are doing it for a great cause!

After you complete your climb, CLICK HERE to post on our Virtual Climb page with the number of steps you climbed, your time, and a photo of where you chose to climb!

Will I receive a t-shirt and medal for participating in the Virtual Stair Climb?

Yes! T-shirts and medals can be picked up at the Ketchum-Downtown YMCA on Thursday, September 26 during Packet Pick-Up. Planning to join from outside of Los Angeles? No problem! We will be happy to mail your items to you.

Will our times be recorded?

All Virtual Stair Climb participants will be responsible for timing their own stair climb. After you complete your climb, head to our Virtual Climb page to share all about your virtual climb!

Anything else I need to know?

Don’t forget to use your personal page to fundraise! The Y operates many other free and low-cost programs for children, teens, families and seniors living in some of the most under-resourced communities in the city. This includes teen programs that cultivate our future leaders, youth sports so every child can experience the joy of sports, and summer camps (both day and overnight) that fill youth with self-confidence and the wonder of new experiences. None of these programs would be possible with the funds raised from the YMCA Stair Climb & Urban Hike.
