Why On Earth Is Susan Rorke Climbing 75 Stories?!? And Why Should You Donate to Her Page??
Hi Everybody! Susan Rorke here.
I hope you read this, and when you're done, I hope it inspires you to go back up to the "DONATE NOW" button on the right, click on it, and throw some bread ($$) at my page for this Stair Climbing Event on Sept. 22, '17.
Last year, prior to July 13, 2016, I was a pack-a-day smoker for 49 years, complete with COPD and beginning emphysema. Then, a pesky little bladder tumor appeared, which turned out to be cancerous, which promted and compelled my urgent care doctor, my primary care doctor, and my now new urologist, to all get in my face and order me to quit smoking NOW. And so I did, with the help of 25 mgs. of niacin for 3 weeks at every urge to light up.
So this year, I noticed, as I do each year, the email at work going out from "those Stairs People" who do this event every single year, inviting us all to start daily practice sessions together, right here where we work in our 9-story building, sneaking up the middle stair case to the roof landing level and back, technically 9 stories. My initial reaction, like it was every year, of course was, these people are crazy. But then, I felt my Higher Power elbow me in the ribs and tell me, "Hey. You could do this. You should do this, this year. There's plenty of time for you to work up to it. You - yes you - can do this. Go practice with them." Mind you, I have NEVER been athletic, and had never done any event like this. But The Sweet Creator said to me, "You can do this ..."
I started with just one time up to the roof level, and though it made me winded, it didn't kill me like I assumed it would. So the next day, I went up twice. Again, more winded, but still not killed. Did the rest of the week at twice (2 repetitions) each day. The next week, I tried three times. Rough the first day, but then tolerable, and it still didn't kill me.
So I committed to do The Climb this year, because of my co-workers who do it every year, and because this year, I CAN do it because I haven't smoked since 07.13.16!!! I'm doing this Climb because it's my Life-Affirming Declaration. And it's great that the DTLA YMCA benefits from it, and the folks who live in DTLA will get wonderful programs because of the $$ we raise with this event. Yaaay!
